If you have 30 days to move to your new home, here is a plan for you that will explain how to prepare to move out in a month.

Week one: Countdown from day 30 to day 22

  • Hire movers and confirm your pick-up and drop-off dates with them. This should happen before the 30-day period. If possible, ask your friends and family to help you out while moving.
  • Create a 30-day moving checklist or an inventory of every item you will be taking with you.
  • File an official change of address with the U. S. Postal Service
  • Contact all your utility providers to transfer or cancel the services.
  • If you are planning to move on your own, get your vehicle serviced.
  • Speak with your landlord and let him know about your move. This should be your first task in the 30-days prior to moving

Week two: Day 22 to day 14

  • Order necessary packing materials and pack a few items every single day.
  • Keep all your important documents with you. This includes bank account information, credit/debit cards, medical, school, and vet records, insurance papers, etc.
  • Donate or trash the items that are no longer needed.
  • Pack your suitcase with some immediate needs such as toiletries, clothes, shoes, and medicines.

Week three: Day 14 to day 7

  • Finish packing up your bedroom. Be sure to leave a few clothes and essentials free for the remaining few days.
  • Call your movers a week in advance to make sure they are still coming on your scheduled day.
  • Empty, clean, and pack all the household appliances and furniture pieces you are going to relocate.

  • Curtains, doormats, and other furnishings can pack until the last moment.
  • Pack up all your tools but make sure you have easy access to a pair of scissors, a screwdriver, a couple of screws, a measuring tape, and a pocket knife, as you will most probably need them on moving day.

Week four: Day 7 to moving day

  • Unplug all your electronics and pack up everything in moving boxes. Make sure to keep all the cables and screws in a sealed bag.
  • Pack up your bedroom and be sure to leave a few clothes and essentials free for the remaining few days.
  • Once you pack all of your important items in moving boxes, secure the boxes well and stack them in a safe area where they won't get in your way
  • Label the boxes properly to know what items you have put in each of them.

  • Once everything is done for the move, vacuum, mop, and wipe down your house.
  • Contact your movers one last time and pack a day-of bag.
  • Get enough sleep before the big day.

Moving day

It’s your big day! Get up early, get fresh, and take a rest, so that you have more time before the movers arrive and don’t need to rush things. Also, don't forget to push your family as your moving schedule goes in case there is an emergency and:

  • Make sure that all boxes are labeled with their appropriate contents.
  • Remember to tip your movers and offer drinks or snacks while they are doing the job.
  • Make sure that all the lights and ceiling fans are turned off.
  • Take a note of meter readings so you can verify when you receive a final bill from the utility companies.
  • Lock all your doors and windows and wave your old home goodbye.

Your 30 moving day checklist is complete and now that you know what to do in the 30 days before moving. So, plan ahead and make your move successful.

We are going to break this up by the week. Week one is the beginning of the process, and week four is when you are about to move.

Week one you need to:

  • Start getting quotes and make a reservation on a moving truck or movers
  • Begin packing non-essential items (shoot for around 5 boxes a week)

Week two:

  • Let your utilities know of your last day for power and when to power things on at your new home
  • Do a change of address, as well as with your bank and insurance
  • Keep packing non-essentials

Week three:

  • If you have kids, transfer school info to their new school
  • Get referrals from your doctor for a new doctor
  • Get vet records of your pets to take to a new vet (to find a new vet you can Google best vets in your new location and go by reviews or ask around)
  • Keep packing

Week four:

  • Pack your essentials bag (for more information check out our guide here)
  • Pack big items and non-essentials
  • On your last day, go through and do a final walkthrough to make sure nothing was left behind
