how to pack lamp shades?

Hi, thanks for visiting Movers.com! When you're packing for your move, there are a few items that you may come across that will be more difficult to pack than others. One example are lamps and lamp shades. Since lamps and lamp shades tend to be very delicate, it's important to pack them properly. But with their odd size and shape, sometimes it's difficult to figure out what kind of box you should pack them in or even how they should be packed.

Have no fear though, packing lamps and lamp shades is actually much easier than you think. The key is packing the lamp and the lamp shade in separate boxes. You'll need a large box for the shade and an appropriately sized box for the lamp itself. Make sure the box is only slightly larger than the lamp body, to minimize the amount that it will move around in the box during the move. Once you've obtained your boxes, here's what you need to do:

  • First, remove the light bulb from the lamp and also remove the metal framework that holds the bulb from the shade.
  • Cushion the bottom of the lamp shade box with crumpled up paper or bubble wrap to provide a cushion and stack the lamp shades in the box. You can pack multiple lamp shades together in the same box if you're able to stack them.
  • Once the shades are in the box, surround them with more packing paper to prevent them from touching the inside of the box and to prevent them from being jostled around and damaged during the move.
  • Next, you can work on packing the lamp. Wrap the lamp body in a layer of packing paper and bubble wrap, keeping the cord away from the body. Then, once the lamp is completely covered, wrap the cord up and secure it with a twist tie or electrical tape, then secure it with packing tape to the side of the lamp and wrap it again.
  • Place the wrapped lamp into the box and surround it with more packing paper to cushion it inside the box and then secure the box with packing tape on the outside to seal it off.
