1. New York, NY

This cosmopolitan monster is one of the more expensive cities to live in. It has a median household income of approximately $62,909 across the state and a median home price listed at $829,000. The city offers fast-paced careers, swanky nightlife, a historic past, the best restaurants and many of the world's most iconic neighborhoods. You'll be sure to love the Big Apple -- like all the other 8.5 million people that live there.

2. Los Angeles, CA

Coming in at number two is the City of Angels. This beautiful and vibrant city is filled with celebrities, artists and free spirits that will make you never want to leave. The entertainment industry is what makes this place thrive. It's also incredibly close to the beach as well as woods and hiking trails. LA literally has everything. While the greater LA area has close to 13 million people living there, Los Angeles itself has just below four million residents. The median listing price for a home in Los Angeles is a whopping $899,000 with a median California household income of $67,739.

3. Chicago, IL

With a location right on Lake Michigan, the Windy City is a place to thrive. This Midwestern city is home to over 2.7 million people. With its charm and incredibly beautiful skyline, we can understand why. Chicago can boast a great restaurant scene, world-renowned museums and affordable housing. The median household income for the state of Illinois is just under $61,000 and has a a median listing price of a home at $329,000.

4. Houston, TX

Texas has a number of cities on this list, but the largest is Houston. Thanks to its stable job market, affordable neighborhoods and diverse economy, 2.3 million people call it home. The average Texan's household income is approximately $56,565 while a median listing price for a Houston home is $297,000.

5. Philadelphia, PA

The second largest city on the east coast comes is fifth on our list. Philadelphia is chock full of history and offers a wide array of culture from art to trendy restaurants. The 1.6 million people that live there are glad to call the City of Brotherly Love home. Philly is also a key player in the job market, with several companies in the area such as Comcast, CIGNA, Aramark, and Airgas. The median listing price for a home in Philadelphia is $220,000, and the household income for the state of Pennsylvania is $56,907.

6. Phoenix, AZ

Surprisingly, Phoenix isn't much smaller than Philadelphia. The Arizona desert is great for those who love hiking, sunshine and the great outdoors. This city is known for its bright and sunny weather, impeccable golf courses and low cost of living. With the median listing price of $275,000 and a median Arizona household income being $53,558, you're bound fall in love with the Valley of the Sun.

7. San Antonio, TX

Once again on our list we feature Texas, but this time we're going to Alamo City. This historic city has a great job market, a delicious blend of Texan and Mexican foods, a family-friendly environment and its own fair share of festivals and celebrations. With nearly 1.5 million residents, San Antonio had a major boom in its population in 2012 when it saw an increase of 25,000 residents. The median listing price for a home in San Antonio is around $238,000.

8. San Diego, CA

With beautiful beaches, good food, outdoor activities and plenty of job opportunities, it's no wonder why 1.4 million people call America's Finest City their home. San Diego sits and number 8 on our list but probably not for long. This city is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States with a median home listing price of $685,000.

9. Dallas, TX

Dallas is the second largest city in Texas with just over 1.3 million residents calling it home. Known for its entrepreneurship, innovation and technology, this city provides a diverse background and vibrant culture. With a booming economy and job market, the city itself has a median listing price of $400,000 -- one of the higher prices on our list.

10. San Jose, CA

Last, but certainly not least, is San Jose. This smaller Californian city is home to roughly 1 million residents and rated one of the most livable cities in America. San Jose has a lot of space, has a great job market, smart schools and constant sunshine. The median listing price for a home in San Jose is remarkably high on this list at $998,000.
